Plasminogen Deficiency
Plasminogen deficiency (PLGD) is a rare disorder in which patients do not produce enough functional plasminogen. Plasminogen is made in the liver and gets converted into an enzyme called plasmin. Plasmin’s role is to break down the main component of blood clots, called fibrin. Interference with the breakdown of clots can lead to blood clots in various areas of the body. It also causes inflamed growths on the mucous membranes – often around the eyes and mouth. These growths can affect the normal function of involved organs.
